Challenges
The project required a container capable of housing a heavy 3D printing robot with a stable and solid base to minimise vibrations during operation, ensuring both precision and safety.
It also needed to be easily transported by trailer to various exhibition and site locations, with a design that allowed for straightforward loading, unloading, and secure transit.
To accommodate the robot arm, which extends up to 2 metres during operation, the container had to include side sections that could be extended when in use and retracted for transport.
Additionally, the design needed to incorporate a safe and accessible compartment for a generator that would provide power at all locations.
Finally, the client sought a visitor area within or adjacent to the container to host meetings and support engagement during events.
Solutions
The 20-foot container was converted into a versatile operational space to accommodate the client’s requirements. To support the robot’s weight and reduce vibrations during operation, the original floorboards were removed and replaced with a 25 mm heavy steel sheet at the base. Its sturdy structure also made it well suited for easy transportation between exhibitions and site locations.
A hydraulic system was integrated to enable lateral extension of the container, allowing the robot arm to operate freely with its full 2-metre reach while maintaining a compact form for transport.
The generator and hydraulic power pack were securely housed on the short side of the container within a lockable cabinet. This cabinet features louvers to ensure proper air circulation and cooling.
For visitor engagement, a rooftop deck was constructed with handrails and stairs, designed to serve as a space for meetings and gatherings. Both the handrails and stairs are easily removable, enabling quick setup and teardown during transport.
Results
The container unit has been successfully deployed at various locations across the GCC, demonstrating strong operational performance in all environments. Client feedback has been highly positive, with the design meeting expectations for stability, mobility, and functionality. Building on this success, Green Box Containers is now working with the client on plans to develop additional units for use in Italy.
